Buying a new Snow Plow Kit
Universal snow plows that will fit many brands, models, and years. Universal only refers to the snow plow mount.
Aftermarket item-specific snow plows for your make, model, and year.
OEM item-specific snow plows for your make, model, and year. OEM snow plow kits will be up to the same quality as aftermarket snow plow kits, but will cost a lot more.
Plow Mounts:
Front Mounted Universal Plow Mount
Front Mounted Item Specific Plow Mount
Mid Mounted Universal Plow Mount
Mid Mounted Item Specific Plow Mount
Whether you buy a front-mounted plow mount or a mid-mounted one is up to you. Both work just as well. My preference is a front-mounted set-up as there is no loss of ground clearance and these are easier to install and remove.
Snow Plow Blades and Push Tubes:
Both Universal and Item Specific snow plow blades are the same.
The Universal Push Tubes are also the same as Item Specific, it's just the snow plow mount that is different.
The Universal Snow Plow Kits are generally a bit cheaper, but they work just as well.
Some blade designs are tapered on the end to not only move snow, but to throw it out of the path like a full-size DOT truck.
Some of our UTV / SXS have a choice of 3 colors. Black, red or yellow.
Other blade designs are non-tapered and are generally a cheaper price. Once angled to the left or the right, these blades work just as well as the tapered ones.
My advice is to look for known ATV, UTV/SXS or Truck makes, models, and years that the universal snow plow mount will fit before buying a Universal Snow Plow Kit. We always add this information to our listings. If your ride is not mentioned, don't buy one.
Snow Plow Sizes:
Generally, your plow should be 2 to 3 inches wider than your wheel track for ATV / UTV / SXS and a couple more for the bigger Trucks. Don't run with a plow blade the same or smaller than your wheel track.
BCS 2 Wheel Tractor: 36"
Lawn Tractor sizes in inches: 46"
ATV sizes in inches: 48" - 50-" - 54" - 60"
UTV / SXS sizes in inches: 60" - 66" - 72"
Jeep, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and similar Trucks / SUVs 82" - 84" - 88"
Winches and 2-inch front hitches:
ATV & UTV / SXS already have a winch fitted as standard. If you need one, a small 2000lb winch is all you need. Front hitches are not needed. Our 3500lb winches don't cost much more and the bigger winch is also useful on four-wheel drive tracks if you get stuck.
Trucks and Jeeps will need a 2 inch front hitch and a winch in most cases. Item specific mounts are available for some models though. Again, a 2000lb winch will work with your plow but why would you go so small. I recommend a 6000lb plus winch.
Winch rope or wire cable. Your choice. I'm old school and would run with wire, up to you.
Plow accessories:
First of all, look for accessories that may have already been added to a snow plow kit. Generally, these will be a set of Plow Markers or Plow Flags.
Plow Markers or Plow Flags: To guide you where your plow blade ends are
Snow Plow Hydro-Turn Systems: To turn your blade left and right from your cab. Most kits will require you to do this manually.
Snow Plow Pulley Fairlead: This is an upgrade for your winch fairlead and will increase the life of your winch rope or cable. I highly recommend a snow plow pulley fairlead upgrade.
UTV / SXS Pushtube Lift Kits. These are available in 2" and 4" different sizes to accommodate oversized tires and lifted UTV and SxS machines.
UTV / SXS Plow Blade Box Ends: For gathering snow without rolling it off the side of the blade.
Plow Lights: For plowing at night and also showing other vehicles where you are if you are on or near a road.
Shipping costs:
Snow plow kits are large heavy items to haul. Look for free shipping. We ship all our ATV / UTV / SXS Plow Kits and accessories for free to the Lower 48 only. Our Truck Plows cost a flat rate of $350.00 to the Lower 48. We have loaded some truck plows with free shipping. An example is smaller Trucks, Jeeps & SUVs with a 72-inch blade.

Built-in safety with snow plow kits:
Under the snow are hidden dangers such as tree stumps, sidewalks, and other solid objects. Always keep your speed down, but if you do hit a solid object even at a slower speed, damage can happen to your plow setup. The skid feet are designed to keep your blade off the ground and they may break if contact is made with a solid object. They are designed to do just that. We always have spare skid feet available for your plow. I recommend keeping a spare one. If you hit something like a tree stump at speed this will compromise your push tubes. Again this is what push tubes are designed to do. This saves your plow blade and machine from major damage.
Plowing on hills or slopes:
Always plow up and down a slope. Never plow across the slope of the hill as that is a rollover waiting to happen.
What's the best time to buy?
September to October. This gives you time to assemble your snow plow kit and familiarise yourself with operating your plow. As the season rolls on, plow kits sell out and there can be lengthy shipping times due to bad weather. So get in early before the snow falls and ahead of the mad rush.
